More kitchen progress

This blog chronicles my entire kitchen renovation from start to finish. Greentea Design has provided me with their solid wood kitchen cabinets, and I'm taking care of the rest.

If you'd like to be brought up to date, check out the archive in the sidebar for previous posts. I posted recently about the arrival of the cabinets, and now for the arrival of the appliances and some other odds and ends that have been completed.

Since my last post things have been moving along in my kitchen. The end is near and I could not be happier with the way the space has turned out, and I am dying to cook my first meal in probably 6 weeks. This post is going to be a bit random, of different projects that have progressed, and next time I'll show you details of the lighting.

Let me start with the arrival of the appliances. I was so stoked to see them in the kitchen. To finally have a fridge that has a freezer in it...to be able to have ice in my drinks without having to go down to the chest freezer in the basement and bash a bag of ice on the ground. It was a scary sight to see them being moved into the house though, let me tell you. The movers removed all the packaging and then carried them into the house, through my narrow front door in the pouring rain up my rickety steps. I held my breath. The stove, I was told, weighs about 500 lbs. Amazingly, it survived the trip into the house. It was left in the middle of the floor while it awaited the gas guy's visit for the hook up.

The uppers were installed, in about 15 minutes, while I was upstairs locked in my bedroom with the cats. LOVE EM.

Here is a photo of the kitchen with the uppers in place and, well, at least the fridge in place.

Unfortunately, when there's plumbing involved, there's some cutting of cabinets involved. Made me almost want to cry to be honest. The cuts turned out to be not too bad in the end.

Here is a photo of the corner where the plumber made use of the empty space.

The window was finally installed above where the sink will be. I LOVE it - the view isn't the greatest, but I'll have to do something to the side of my shed to make it a bit more appealing. The best part is the contractor said he could install it so there is a nice 8" or so ledge where I could put a plant or the cats could perch. He did such a great job on the framing. It's already cat tested and approved.

The hatch has been made and installed over the basement stairs. I haven't had a chance to paint it out yet, and we're having a hard time finding a shock or something that will make it stay open (and avoid loss of fingers or tails), but it's looking really good. Imagine it gray.

One last minor item - I found the coolest vent covers at Home Depot that work perfectly so I don't have to attempt to paint any the floor colour.

Looking GREAT Kim! I cannot WAIT to see the final result. The grey turned out perfect, if you ask me, much more interesting and unexpected than white. The window and vent covers are fab, too. Great job, keep going! How lucky you are to have this done is such a (relatively) short period of time :) Don't even get me started on my own past reno experiences...

Kim,

I really like the cabinets - definately a custom look.

FYI: I did a full blog of our kitchen remodel last year: 10K Kitchen Remodel (10kkitchenremodel.blogspot.com)with a similar level of detail as yours.

Also, I have Desire to Inspire at the top of my RSS list.

Best of luck on your project.

Best of luck

WOW Kim! I have to say I was skeptical at first about the painted floors. But you totally made it work! I have been thinking about doing the same but too chicken.

Alexis

OK, the window ledge is too perfect; I truly smiled when I saw your sweet kitty sitting there, gazing out the window! How cute.

And the appliances look killer. Exciting, exciting.

looks really nice, clean, bright and airy. The windowsill is perfect, love it.

I remember when our old fridge finally broke down and we purchased a stainless steel side by side. With an ice machine and water in the door! The days of buying and bashing in ice bags are now far behind us too. ;)
Everything in your kitchen is coming along beautifully.

Thanks Sam! Aren't renos FUN??!!??!!

Maybe I should have taken notes from your blog TTFWEB. Perhaps I could have saved a few bucks.

Alexis - PAINT YOUR FLOORS!!! You won't regret it. Just make sure to use FLOOR PAINT.

Courtney, Phoebe was sitting on the ledge watching stuff flapping on the outside of the house (still needs new siding). I guess I can't cram the ledge with stuff now.

Thanks Melanie and C. !

On track to a brilliant kitchen!!

Kim the kitchen is so lovely!! I really cant wait. I almost want to invite myself over to stare at it.
I want to know about painting the floors. Your selection in choice of gray is perfect. It looks white, what made you go for this rather than white? Would white paint look yellowish?
Do painted wooden floors require more maintenance?

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!! I bought the same vent covers! We have two in the same style in our living room, and we bought the simpler and very shiny silver ones that are just barred for the rest of the house.

I just love those, and the black plastic insert inside them is completely invisible, which I love.

Did you have to get tape gunge off your fridge? If so, how did you do it?

Wow! this is coming along very nicely. Love the details! And yes! yes! yes on the vent cover. Small details that make such a huge difference.

I can't believe how fast this is being done. I think we should all tell our contractors we will post their work online! :)

Looks great!

Manvi - I think it's the lighting in the photos that make it look white-ish but they really look grey in person. I got varnish that I was told would not give a yellow tint to the colour - so if varnish is used that would be something to ask about. If you use the proper paint (ie. floor paint) I don't think the floors have more maintenance than regular stained floor.

LOL - that's too funny Janine. I only bought one of those vents but I'll go get more for the rest of the vents on the grey floor. And I did not have goo on my fridge. I would have lost it had that happened. I usually use Goo Gone to get goo off (go figure), but not sure if it's ok on stainless.

Thanks Elfya! This process would have been done by now if my contractor would come by each day (ie. didn't come today, and a few other days) and work maybe more than 5 hours a day. :) Can't complain because the work is done well.

Ohhhhhhhh, Anon, that's an awesome table, at a great price!!! I do have a dining table in progress, or so I hear from my contractor. :)

Kim, what kind (mark, model) of a fridge it is? Not so deep.
The cabinets are amazing. Its look great.
ps.Sorry for my english.Do you understand French?

Anon, the fridge is by Fisher & Paykel, an Australian brand. I bought it because it is counter-deep.

Merci beaucoup!
Ta cuisine devienne très belle.:)

Merci Anon!! Voici le magasin: http://www.universalappliances.com

Hey now, you lost me there with the French.

Love the cabinets Kim. Tres chic!

WOW, those cabinets are great! Saw your pix on Flickr and found my way over here. Never have heard of this type of cabinet but am interested since I am getting ready to redo my own kitchen.

I can not WAIT to see the final outcome:-)

There's so much to comment on in this post, but my favorite thing is that little vent! It's such a small detail but adds so much character.
