Lighting completed

This blog chronicles my entire kitchen renovation from start to finish. Greentea Design has provided me with their solid wood kitchen cabinets, and I'm taking care of the rest.

If you'd like to be brought up to date, check out the archive in the sidebar for previous posts. I posted recently about the arrival of the appliances and some other odds and ends, and now for the completed lighting.

The lighting and wiring in my new kitchen is FINALLY completed. Everyone always says how key lighting is in a space and guess what? They're RIGHT!! The kitchen looked great once the cabinets were in but now that it's properly lit, WOW - the cabinets look even more fabulous. What a difference from the old kitchen, with one ceiling fan with 3 lights, and a lamp on the counter. Now I have 9 potlights, 3 pendants, 2 wall lamps and under-cabinet light strips. Funny thing is now that the kitchen is so well lit, all the other rooms have such crappy lighting in comparison.

Here are a few photos of the kitchen taken right after the electrician finished up (hood fan was mid-installation).

The pendants I bought at Crawford Alexander turned out to be a perfect fit with the look I was going for. They are industrial and fun and quirky...and since I have no dining table yet, everyone is cursing them because we've all bashed our heads on them numerous times. I have regular bulbs in them but because of the shape of them they give off hardly any light so I have to pick up some floodlights to use instead.

I am so happy I finally decided to purchase Tolomeos. I have always loved them but never splurged until now. And I am SO GLAD I did. I love how they look on either side of the stove and they provide great task lighting. The following photos also show the stove in place, the hood fan and the stove's backsplash installed.

Note on the backsplash: The one I had seen at the appliance store was over $500. I had this one made for $150. I need to find some shelves to attach to it to hold spice jars, utensils etc.

Potlights are a must, as I quickly learned. I had no clue on where they should go or how many I should have, so I got alot of help from my electrician. There are 9 in total, strategically placed over the sink, the stove, the fridge, the pantry and a few others. They illuminate the cabinets and appliances beautifully. They were a headache to install because the drywall and wood panelling in the ceiling had to come down so they could go up, but it was well worth it.

There are also lighting strips installed under the upper cabinets that are great to illuminate the countertop on that end of the kitchen where I will probably end up doing the most prepping. The uppers are not built with an overhang so my contractor has built a simple valance to hide the lighting strips and wires but hasn't completed it yet because he has to re-stain it in the hopes of matching the cabinet colour. There are 2 strips, and they have a low setting that gives off a yellowish light and a high setting that gives off a bright white light. Hard to photograph but here's the idea.

Later on this week I'll show you what all this looks like with the countertop installed. All I can say is WOW. And WOW.

Is that a regular 30 inch stove or larger? I am looking to replace mine and just love the industrial look of this with the stainless hood. Hoping to find something similar. Thanks!

Ditto. All I can say is WOW and WOW. The lighting looks so fantastic. And your floor looks wonderful, and the cabinets look wonderful.... can't wait to see it decorated.

Did you put your stuff back in your living room yet? When this is all done, I would love to see sweeping shots from all angles.

Great work!

And I will add another WOW! What a transformation ~ it looks super fantastic Kim! Everything you cook in there will be delicious! Everything! The Greentea cabinets are seriously sublime...the lighting - ahhhhh.

Also, I think those Tolomeos will stir pots and do other tasks for you. That front shot of them and the stove?! They're scheming already. Leave the ingredients and pots out one evening and *TA DA* I bet you wake up to a beautiful breakfast.

Looking at a space & seeing and then realizing the possibilities. SO nicely done Kim.
Happy cooking.

Oh, it looks great. The cabinets are so unique and the pendants are fantastic. You must be very pleased. Congrats on a great renovation!

Congrats -it looks so fabulous and I know you'll love using it! I'm green with envy!!

The lighting is spectacular!! I am such a lighting fanatic; I love the pendants, and all the task lighting is perfect. Looking good!

Wow, I love it!! Seriously, I love those cabinets. Can't wait to see what you use as a table. Also, can't wait to see the countertops.

When was the first time you saw Greeentea and how did you hear about them?

No room for a dishwasher? I just couldn't make it without a dishwasher. Although, if there is not enough room then I get it. Microwave?

I love how it is all coming together! The floor looks great! Lighting was the most fun part for me when we built our house. I share your excitement-- you made GREAT choices!!

Yeah, I too think the lights look great.

Kim mentioned some posts back during her planning that she didn't include a dishwasher since it's just her in the house and she had never really used the dishwasher she had much.

As for the microwave. She mentioned putting it on the counter. I mentioned in the comments on that post that in the Greentea Design store we put the microwave in a pantry so its tucked out of site.

Happy to be in the final stretch! Kitchen is really looking good now.

Let me add another wow. The lighting is the icing on this gorgeous cake.

Well done! I love the contrasts, the cabinets look sooo good, and I can't wait to see the light gleaming off your counters :)

WOW WOW WOW!!!
love everything! those pendant lights are PERFECT!

Lyndsey, the stove is a 30". Isn't it pretty? I adore the industrial look to it. It's a Fisher & Paykel DCS with FIVE burners!! :)

Thanks Peggy! I have put stuff back in the living room but now it needs major reworking to match what's going on in the kitchen. Jo has called the new living room "boho zen moroccan". My next task.

Thanks AMR! I'm waiting for the day I wake up to breakie made by my tolomeos. LOL!!

Thanks Jenny - I am so pleased I am beyond words.

Thanks ArchitectDesign!

Thanks Courtney - I too am a lighting fanatic and almost had a breakdown trying to find decent lighting in this city. Took a while but was worth the stress.

Robin from OK, I had seen Greentea's cabinets in an issue of Canadian Home & Country a couple of years ago. Then they contacted us last year for advertising and I figured I'd do the unthinkable and ask about a partnership. VOILA - my Greentea kitchen.

Robin, as Mike said, a dishwasher takes up way too much valuable storage space in this small kitchen. I'd rather hand-wash. I tried putting my new microwave in the pantry but it only allows the door to open halfway. So close! But it can sit on the counter since I got a cute little stainless one.

Thanks Heidi!

Thanks Mike! Your cabinets really stand out under the lights.

Thanks Jo!

Thanks Brandy - stay tuned for counter photos on Thursday.

...and thanks layersofmeaning!

I so look forward, each day, for a progress report and am never dissappointed. It's a beautiful kitchen and so unique with those fab cabinets. You've done such a nice job in choices to compliment them and not take away. Not too much, just enough. Very well done!

:) Thank you L!

Like everyone else has said...WOW! Though I still miss the pink walls, this is turning out gorgeous and I can't wait to see how you mesh this with your living room.

Lighting is everything and the lighting in your kitchen is amazing!!!

It looks spectacular.

Thanks Isaspacey, C and Melanie!

STUNNING ..EVERYTHING! The lighting is perfect by the way... : ) Your new counters look almost exactly like mine...same color and all.
